The Short Version

 This may surprise you, but Don hated writing in school. He wasn’t one of those writers who tell you their only goal in life was to be a published author.

No, it wasn’t until he came to Christ later in life and he actually started to listen to God. Don still doesn’t know if His plan is for him to be a bestselling author, but he does know He has called Don to write.

He is married to his high school sweetheart and they have two adult children, two dogs a new grandson that Don is Pops too and his granddaughter calls him Ghost boogie.

The Long Version

Don Mathews was born and raised in New Hampshire where he married his high school sweetheart.  They have two adult kids, two grandkids, and two golden doodles. He is also part owner in a hot sauce company with his son. And runs a review website for Christian men to find quality books of Christians In Action, which is the name of the website (www.ciareviews.com)

His taste in range from J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis to Joel C Rosenberg. Don collects antique writing instruments like typewriters and fountain pens. When he isn’t writing Don likes to sim race with his son and spend time with his new grandson and hunt for dragon eggs with his granddaughter, who calls him Ghost boogie after slimer from the Ghostbuster cartoon.

Don would be the first one to tell you he was a terrible student and wasted many years of academics. He didn’t do well because he wasn’t smart enough. Don did terrible. because he was lazy. A trait he has worked hard to get rid of. In fact, if you told him this C student in English would be a writer, he would have called you a liar.

It wasn’t until he listened to a radio show from LA, back in the early days of streaming on the internet that he discovered he was to be a writer. After listening to a man named Ed Tyll. Tyll was talking about reading scripts to learn from the great ones. Something within Don stirred and he started to print hundreds of pages of scripts trying to learn. He was all set to become a screenplay writer. That is until he told his wife he wanted to learn to write.  Being the loving wife she is, she bought Don a how to write book. Only problem was it was “The Everything Guide To Writing A Novel” and a pen and pencil set. He was writing a screenplay and now he has this how to book on novels. He even had several thousand words on page of his screenplay already.

Something within him told him needed to turn his screenplay into a novel. He would later discover what that something, or someone was. God. It felt right writing the book. But times weren’t always perfect during his writing adventure.  What Don thought was life getting in the way, he decided to quit. After Don decided to quit writing, he was listening to a talk show and the first things he heard was “So you want to be a writer.” He knew right then it was God calling him to write.  It hasn’t always been rainbows and kittens along his journey. There were a few times Don nearly gave up on writing all together, but God always called him back.

Despite knowing God called Don to be a writer, he continues to be attacked by the enemy and turns to praying for his strength to continue what he was called to do.
